Help your doctor move beyond guidelines to learn the science and develop the clinical skills to effectively treat tobacco dependence.

OUR CLINICAL FOCUS: Education for physicians and health professionals

OUR SPECIALITY: Training physicians to effectively diagnose and treat pulmonary diseases, especially tobacco dependence

Effective tobacco-dependence treatment now exists. You need to know about it, expect it and demand it.

We have a wide range of programs that can help physicians provide you with effective treatment for tobacco dependence. Ask your doctor to contact us for a consultation or to discuss our professional education programs.

You won’t get reimbursed for the costs of seeing your doctor to help you or your loved ones stop smoking or get reimbursed for the costs of the medications necessary to effectively treat tobacco dependence until you let your legislators in Washington and in your state capital know that you expect that and need that. And that you expect them to require your insurance company to provide that benefit for you and your family. After all, it is a medical fact that being tobacco dependent and smoking cigarettes is no more your fault than if you have asthma or hypertension. Insurance companies are stuck in the last century when the conventional wisdom was that smoking cigarettes was merely a bad habit. But, it’s not. It’s a chronic condition.

Better than writing or e-mailing your legislators, visit their offices and talk to them. Remember how effective women’s groups were 15 years ago in getting insurance coverage mandated for annual Pap testing and annual mammograms? Take a lesson from that playbook.

And while you’re at it, ask them to support efforts to require all health professional schools – medical schools, nursing schools, pharmacy schools, and dental schools – train their graduates to have the same level of knowledge and insight about tobacco dependence as they do for other major killers, such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or cancer.

Our research and educational programs are supported by gifts and grants from supporters such as yourself who want to see tobacco dependence eliminated. Donations made to the Center are tax deductible as provided by law. Click here to make a donation.
